There was a doctor who claimed to be good at treating surgical cases.

One day, a general was struck by an arrow from the enemy on the battlefield. The arrow had penetrated into his flesh, so he called for the "surgeon".

The general told him what had happened. The "surgeon" said repeatedly: "The treatment is easy! The treatment is easy!"

He took up a pair of sharp scissors, and with a snap cut off the exposed arrow shaft. He handed over the arrow shaft to the general and said: "It's done. Please give me my pay."

These words left the general not knowing whether to laugh or to cry. He said to the "surgeon": "The arrow head is still in my flesh. You must get it out quickly."

The "surgeon" said: "The arrow head in the flesh is a matter of internal medicine and has nothing to do with my 'surgery'.

A bear, who had made his living by dancing for a long time, at length escaped from his master, and returned to his former companions in the woods.

His brothers welcomed him with most friendly growls. The traveler now told what he had seen foreign countries, told a long history of his adventures, and, to exhibit his wonderful feats, began, in an erect position, to dance the Polonaise. His brothers, who were watching the performance, were astonished at his grace, and tried to imitate his ballet steps. It was in vain, hardly were they raised on two legs when they fell again upon all fours. Seeing their awkwardness, the bear went on exhibiting some higher displays of his art, which, at length, aroused the envy of the others, and so they drove him from their society.

The ass and a lap-dog

A man had an ass and lovely lap-dog.

The ass was left in a stable, and had plenty of oats and day to eat, just as any other ass would. The lap-dog knew many tricks, and was a great favourite with his master.

The master seldom went out to dine or to super without bringing him something nice to eat when he jumped about him in a pleasant manner. The ass, on the contrary, had much work to do, in grinding the corn-mill and in carrying wood from the forest or burdens from the farm,. He often co plained about his own hard fate, and contrasted it with the luxury and idleness of the lap-dog. At last one day he broke the chain and ran into his master's house, kicking up his heels without measuring and jumping as well as he could, he next tried to jump about his master as he had seen the lap-dog do, but he broke the table, and smashed all the dishes on it to pieces. He then tried to lick his master, and jumped upon his back. The servants hearing the strange noise, and imagining the danger of his master, quickly helped him out of the situation and drove out the ass to his stable, with kicks and beatings. The ass, as he returned to his stall beaten nearly to death, thus cried and said sadly, "I have brought it all on myself! Why could I not have been contented to labour with my companions, and not wish to be idle all the day like that useless little alp-dog".

"To be or not to be". Outside the Bible, these six words are the most famous in all the literature of the world. They were spoken by Hamlet when he was thinking aloud, and they are the most famous words in Shakespeare because Hamlet was speaking not only for himself but also for every thinking man and woman. To be or not to be, to live or not to live, to live richly and abundantly and eagerly, or to live dully and meanly and scarcely. A philosopher once wanted to know whether he was alive or not, which is a good question for everyone to put to himself occasionally. He answered it by saying: "I think, therefore am."

But the best definition of existence ever saw did another philosopher who said: "To be is to be in relations." If this true, then the more relations a living thing has, the more it is alive. To live abundantly means simply to increase the range and intensity of our relations. Unfortunately we are so constituted that we get to love our routine. But apart from our regular occupation how much are we alive? If you are interest-ed only in your regular occupation, you are alive only to that extent. So far as other things are concerned--poetry and prose, music, pictures, sports, unselfish friendships, politics, international affairs--you are dead.

Contrariwise, it is true that every time you acquire a new interest--even more, a new accomplishment--you increase your power of life. No one who is deeply interested in a large variety of subjects can remain un-happy, the real pessimist is the person who has lost interest.

Bacon said that a man dies as often as he loses a friend. But we gain new life by contacts, new friends. What is supremely true of living objects is only less true of ideas, which are also alive. Where your thoughts are, there will your live be also. If your thoughts are confined only to your business, only to your physical welfare, only to the narrow circle of the town in which you live, then you live in a narrow cir-conscribed life. But if you are interested in what is going on in China, then you are living in China~ if you’re interested in the characters of a good novel, then you are living with those highly interesting people, if you listen intently to fine music, you are away from your immediate surroundings and living in a world of passion and imagination.

To be or not to be--to live intensely and richly, merely to exist, that depends on ourselves. Let widen and intensify our relations. While we live, let live!

When he told me he was leaving I felt like a vase which has just smashed. There were pieces of me all over the tidy, tan tiles. He kept talking, telling me why he was leaving, explaining it was for the best, I could do better, it was his fault and not mine. I had heard it before many times and yet somehow was still not immune; perhaps one did not become immune to such felony.

He left and I tried to get on with my life. I filled the kettle and put it on to boil, I took out my old red mug and filled it with coffee watching as each coffee granule slipped in to the bone china. That was what my life had been like, endless omissions of coffee granules, somehow never managing to make that cup of coffee.

Somehow when the kettle piped its finishing warning I pretended not to hear it. That’s what Mike’s leaving had been like, sudden and with an awful finality. I would rather just wallow in uncertainty than have things finished. I laughed at myself. Imagine getting all philosophical and sentimental about a mug of coffee. I must be getting old.

And yet it was a young woman who stared back at me from the mirror. A young woman full of promise and hope, a young woman with bright eyes and full lips just waiting to take on the world. I never loved Mike anyway. Besides there are more important things. More important than love, I insist to myself firmly. The lid goes back on the coffee just like closure on the whole Mike experience.

He doesn’t haunt my dreams as I feared that night. Instead I am flying far across fields and woods, looking down on those below me. Suddenly I fall to the ground and it is only when I wake up that I realize I was shot by a hunter, brought down by the burden of not the bullet but the soul of the man who shot it. I realize later, with some degree of understanding, that Mike was the hunter holding me down and I am the bird that longs to fly. The next night my dream is similar to the previous nights, but without the hunter. I fly free until I meet another bird who flies with me in perfect harmony. I realize with some relief that there is a bird out there for me, there is another person, not necessarily a lover perhaps just a friend, but there is someone out there who is my soul mate. I think about being a broken vase again and realize that I have glued myself back together, what Mike has is merely a little part of my time in earth, a little understanding of my physical being. He has only, a little piece of me.

When love beckons you, follow him, though his ways are hard and stccp. And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your most tender branches that quiver in the sun,so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart and in that knowledge become a fragment of life's heart. But if,in your fear, you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakeness and pass out of love's threshing-floor. into the season less world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep. but not all of your tears. Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from pssesse, not nor would it be possessed. for love is sufficient into love.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and have desires, don't let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love

  And to bleed willingly andjoyfully.

  To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

  清晨,带着一颗生翼的心醒来,感谢又一个充满爱的日子;

  To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;

  午休,沉思爱的心醉神怡;

To return home at eventide with gratitude; And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart.

On Christmas Eve she return s home, and in her hand is beautiful bos containing a gold watch chain which she purchased bys elling her hair. Suddenly Della begins to worry. She knows Jim admired her long hair, and she wonders if he will be disappointed that she cut it ott and sold it.

Della climbs the final flight of stairs leading to their tiny apartment. She unlocks the door and is surprised to find Jim home and waiting for her. In his hand is a neatly wrapped box containing the gift he purchased for her.

When Della removes her scarf, Jim sees Della's short hair, and tears well up in his eyes. But she says nothing. He chokes back the tears and gives Della the gift box.

When Della opens it, she can't believe her eyes. There in the box is a set of beautiful silver combs for her long hair.

And when Jim opens his gift, he, too, is astonished. There inside the box is a beautiful gold chain for his gold pocket watch. Only then does Della realize that Jim pawned his gold watch to buy her the silver hair combs.

Far more beautiful than the gifts is the love they symbolize.

She looked at me ,said"thanks"and gave me a kiss on the check.I want to tell her,I want her to know that I don't to be just friends,I love her but I am just tooshy, and I don't know why.

  I wish I did too,I thought to myself,and I cried.

A woman came out of her house and saw three old men with long hite beards sitting in her front yard. She did not recognize them. She said"I don't think I know you,but you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat."

"Is the man of the house home?"they asked.

  "No,"she said."He's out."

"Then we cannot come in",they replied,

In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened."Go tell them I am home and invite in!"The woman went out and invited the men in.

"We do not go into a house together ,"they replied.

"Why is that?"she wanted to know.

One of the old men explained:"His name is Wealth,"he said pointing to one of his friends, and said pointing to another one,"He is Success, and I am Love."Then he added,"Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home."

The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her huaband was overjoyed."How nice!",he said."Since that is the case, let us invite Wealth.Let him come and fill our home with wealth!"

His wife disagreed,"My dear, why don't we invite Success?"Their daughter-in-law was listening from the other corner of the house. She jumped in with her own suggestion:"Would it not be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love!"

"Let us heed our daughter-in-law's advice,"said the husband to his wife."Go out and invite Love to be our guest."

The woman went out and asked the three old men,"Which one of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest."

Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other two also got up and followed him.Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success:"I only invited Love, why are you coming in?"

The old men replied together:"If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would have stayed, but since you invited Love, wherever he goes,we go with him.Wherever there is Love, there is also Weath and Success!"

Bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail! and see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance;so,in the commencement of life,we set no bounds to our inclinations.nor to the unrestricted opportunities of grastifying them.we have as yet found no obstacle,no disposition to flag;and it seems that we can go on so forever.

We look round in a new world, full of life, and motion, and ceaseless progress;and feel in ourselves all the vigour and spirit to keep pace with it,and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things, decline into old age,and drop into the grave. It is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedness of our feelings in youth, that(so to speak)identifies us with nature ,and(our experience being slight and our passions strong)deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it.

Our short-lives connexion with existence we fondly flatter ourselves,is an indissoluble and lasting union-a honeymoon that knows neither coldness, jar, nor separation. As infants smile and sleep,we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies, and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us0we quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it,instead of which it only overflows the more-objects press around us,filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them,so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind. It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees. It is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep spring of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exits in a man of 60, more than a boy of 20.nobody grows merely by the number of years; we grow old by deserting our ideas. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust1 bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from infinite, so long as you are young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with the snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.
